Hazrat Sultan Bahu, the founder of the Sufi spiritual order, silsila Sarwari Qadri, is acknowledged as one of the most prominent Sufi poets of South Asia. He is the author of this beloved  collection of Punjabi quatrain verses, or dohas, Abiyat-e-Bahu. It has been translated in this work by Amna Hayat Khan into English prose rather than in a poetry format in order to give the essence of the message priority over form. “The poems are,…replete with passionate, admonishing, cautionary, visionary, inspirational messages dyed in the mystical consciousness. The subject matter varies tremendously from bait to bait, but the core theme is the subduing of the lower soul (al- nafs- al- ammara) and attaining higher Love”. Sultan Bahu is also known to be the author of 140 books in Persian and Arabic dealing primarily with Faqr, the highest method of spiritual realisation. Written in the Persian language, Risala Ruhi, translated here from the Persian language into English by Amna Hayat Khan, is the shortest and the most powerful of Hazrat Sultan Bahu’s writings. Though “[I]t is essentially a Divinely inspired writing which creates metaphysical awareness on many levels” in the reader, the central theme of this work is the spiritual exposition of Tawhid, the understanding of God in His Unity.
