The first edition of this book was published in 1969 and was adjudged by Writer's Guild as the best book of the year. The first edition primarily focused on world trade with particular emphasis on trading problems of the developing countries in general and of Pakistan in particular. Since the first edition, Pakistan has experienced fluctuating fortunes from a socio­economic perspective. The changing political and economic situation globally including Fall of Dhaka, end of the Cold War, reunification of East and West Germany, emergence of China as a new economic power and 9/11 has had a deep impact on Pakistan.

This revised edition in essence presents the panoramic overview of the current economic situation. Part I of the book entails the economic relationship of Pakistan with the rest of the world, highlighting issue of balance of trade and its impact on our local market. Statistics for various trading patterns such as composition of imports and exports and our key trading partners are presented in this section. Section II presents the country specific analysis of composition of trade and their trading patterns for the last few decades to give the reader an appreciation as to how the trading relationships have evolved. This section also discusses future strategies with these countries to attain a mutually beneficial trading relationship.

The book is recommended to policy makers, academics, students and all those well wishers who want to see Pakistan become socio-economically self-sufficient. The author, Yusuf H. Shirazi, is the founder Chairman of Atlas Group.He is a Law Graduate (LLB) with BA (Hons.) and Diploma in Journalism and Public Affairs from Punjab University and Advanced Management Program from Harvard. He started his career as journalist and switched over to government service where he served the Financial Services of the Central Superior Services of Pakistan. He has been a Columnist on socio­politico economy and is the author of six books including the first edition of this book which was released in 1969 and has been adjudged by Writer's Guild as the best book of the year.Shirazi has been the President of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industries for two terms. He has been the founder member of Karachi Stock Exchange, Lahore Stock Exchange and International Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He has been on the Board of Harvard Business School Alumni Association, Boston, USA, and is the founder of Harvard Business School Club of Pakistan.Shirazi is an entrepreneur. He started an investment company, viz, Shirazi Investments Limited in 1962 with three men and half a million rupees doing business on stock market, real estate and franchises. Today, Atlas is a diversified group dealing in engineering, power generation, financial services and trading. It consists of seven public limited companies, of which four are quoted on the Stock Exchanges in Pakistan, and seven private limited companies. Atlas shareholders' equity at market value now stands at hundred billion rupees; assets have increased to hundred and ten billion rupees; personnel strength to 10,000 and annual sales have crossed 139 billion rupees. Atlas pays approximately Rs. 30 billion in taxes annually.Shirazi has been a visiting faculty member at National Defense University and National School of Public Policy. He has been on the Board of Governors of LUMS, GIK, Fauji Foundation University, FC College (Chartered University), Pakistan Institute of Management and member of several committees on Industry, Finance and Commerce - and representative member of W orId Bank and IMP.Shirazi is a philanthropist. In addition to being the Founder member of LUMS, GIK, AKU and AI-Shifa Hospital and University, among others, he has established several schools and scholarship endowments in several colleges and universities for deserving students through Atlas Foundation.
